In the spring of 2019, the life of 19-year-old Samantha Coyner, a White female from Somerville, Alabama, was cut tragically short. On the night of April 9th, an altercation erupted at the intersection of Hillwood Drive and Chicamauga Trail in Huntsville, culminating in gunfire. When Huntsville Police responded to calls about a shooting in progress, they discovered Samantha Coyner lying in the road with critical injuries.
She was rushed to Huntsville Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.
Investigators soon pieced together the events that led to the fatal shooting. It was determined that Coyner and witnesses with her had been involved in an attempted drug transaction that went awry. Following the failed exchange, the other parties pursued Coyner's vehicle in a maroon Chevy Malibu. When individuals from Coyner's vehicle got out to confront the occupants of the Malibu, someone from inside the pursuing car opened fire. Samantha Coyner was struck by the gunfire while still inside her vehicle.
Within a short time, officers located the suspects at an address on Bob Wallace Avenue. The investigation led to the arrests of two individuals in connection with the homicide. Joseph Earls, then 18, and Jaylon McKinnley Draper were both charged with capital murder. Authorities believed the incident stemmed from an attempt to use counterfeit money to purchase drugs from Coyner and the individuals she was with.
In the ensuing years, the legal process moved forward. In March 2023, Jaylon McKinnley Draper, then 23, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of murder. As a result of his plea agreement, which came just days before his trial was scheduled to begin, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The other suspect, Joseph Earls, who was accused of being the shooter, had applied for youthful offender status in his case.
