In the late summer of 2023, the life of 20-year-old Sequoiya Mone’e Lamar was tragically cut short in a violent act that also claimed the life of her companion, 24-year-old D'Asia Monique Morris. On the morning of August 29th, Huntsville police responded to a call regarding a shooting on Bonnell Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered both Lamar and Morris deceased at the scene, having suffered from gunshot wounds.
The incident was quickly classified as a double homicide, leaving the community in shock and prompting an intensive investigation. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots, with one resident recounting hearing seven or eight shots in close succession.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to identify 23-year-old Tye'Deshun Stevens as the primary suspect. Within days of the shooting, capital murder warrants were issued for his arrest. Believed to have fled the area, law enforcement tracked Stevens to Anniston, Alabama, where he was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force in early September 2023. He was then extradited back to Madison County to face the charges against him.
Following his arrest, Tye'Deshun Stevens was booked into the Madison County jail on two counts of capital murder. A Madison County grand jury indicted him on these charges in October 2024. In subsequent court appearances, Stevens has been consistently denied bail. Prosecutors have indicated their intent to seek the death penalty in this case and have stated that no plea deal will be offered. The trial for the capital murder of Sequoiya Mone’e Lamar and D'Asia Monique Morris is scheduled to begin on August 17, 2026.
