On January 13, 2023, at approximately 5:29 a.m., 40-year-old David Perez was fatally shot in Lubbock, Texas. Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 1900 block of Avenue M, where they found Perez with a gunshot wound to his side. He was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators determined that Perez was in the back of the residence when an unknown suspect shot him.
The Lubbock Police Department's Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit launched an investigation and sought public assistance in identifying the suspect. A black four-door sedan was seen in the area around the time of the shooting, and authorities released an image of the vehicle, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved. Perez's family has made public pleas for information, expressing their grief and desire for justice. His teenage daughter, Abigail, and other family members have shared memories of Perez, describing him as a loving father of three who enjoyed music, video games, and spending time with his children.
Perez was a graduate of Lubbock High School and had worked for Walmart for seventeen years in various positions. At the time of his death, he was employed as a prep-cook at the Cast Iron Grill, a job he reportedly loved. His family and friends remember him for his passion for music, particularly his love for the band Metallica, and his dedication to his family.
