Isaias Rodriguez, a 34-year-old Hispanic man from Lubbock, Texas, tragically died on November 29, 2017. He was a heating and air conditioning technician who loved spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. Rodriguez's death occurred in an alley behind his home in the 2500 block of Amherst Street in East Lubbock.
The incident began when Rodriguez called 911, reporting a man with a ponytail wearing a black and red Texas Tech hoodie and armed with a gun in the alley
behind his house. Shortly after, Rodriguez was found with a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The confrontation involved Rodriguez, his brother Israel, and another man, Pedro Olvera, who confronted Daniel Rangel and his roommate Ethan Delao in the alley.
Daniel Rangel, a 21-year-old man, was identified as the shooter. Rangel was seen wearing a ponytail and a black Texas Tech hoodie with red and white lettering, matching the description given by Rodriguez in his 911 call. Multiple eyewitnesses, including Rodriguez's brother and a neighbor, identified Rangel as the shooter. Rangel initially denied the allegations but was later found guilty of murder.
In October 2019, Rangel was sentenced to 20 years in prison for Rodriguez's murder. The court heard evidence that Rangel violated the conditions of his community supervision by failing to report to his probation officer, failing to complete an anger management course, and admitting to smoking marijuana while on community supervision. Rangel's sentence will run concurrently with a 20-year sentence for aggravated assault in an unrelated case.
