Jimmy Hernandez Rodriguez, a 41-year-old man, was tragically shot and killed on January 16, 2019, in Lubbock, Texas. The incident occurred in the 1500 block of 37th Street, where Rodriguez was found on the ground by police responding to a shots fired call. He was taken to University Medical Center but later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of two suspects: Miguel Garza, 25, and Anthony Alvarez, 23.
Garza admitted to shooting Rodriguez, claiming he believed Rodriguez was a threat to his family and also wanted to steal Rodriguez's backpack. Alvarez was allegedly the getaway driver and was accused of supplying Garza with the gun. A third man in the vehicle corroborated Garza's statement, while Alvarez denied supplying the gun but admitted to driving the SUV.
Miguel Garza pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison in November 2022. Anthony Alvarez, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and received probation. The case was part of a broader investigation by the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit, which began after the shooting.
