On January 20, 2023, Galveston police responded to reports of gunfire in the 900 block of 39th Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Malik Dunn suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 3900 block of Sealy. Despite officers' attempts at life-saving measures, Dunn was pronounced dead at The University of Texas Medical Branch.
In the ensuing investigation, authorities identified 17-year-old Galveston resident Cameron Vargas as a suspect in Dunn's death. Vargas was arrested on January 23 and charged with murder, with bond set at $250,000. However, by January 25, the Galveston County District Attorney's Office dismissed the charges, citing the need for further investigation and indicating that new evidence had emerged contradicting the initial basis for Vargas's arrest.
Complicating the situation further, on January 22, Galveston police executed a pre-dawn SWAT raid on a residence in the 5300 block of Avenue O, seeking to apprehend Vargas. The raid caused significant property damage, including broken windows and doors, and traumatized the family residing there. Notably, Vargas was not present at the location during the raid. Subsequent scrutiny revealed that the raid was conducted at the wrong house, leading to public outcry and legal action from the affected family.
In response to the mishandled raid and the premature arrest of Vargas, Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli was placed on a 10-day administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the department's actions and communication failures. The city initiated multiple probes to assess the conduct of the officers involved and to address the breakdown in procedures that led to these events.
As of now, the investigation into Malik Dunn's death remains active, with authorities seeking credible information to identify and apprehend the responsible individual(s). The Galveston Police Department continues to encourage anyone with information related to the case to come forward to assist in bringing justice for Dunn and his family.
