Alexis Gonzales, a 20-year-old Hispanic woman from Corpus Christi, Texas, was remembered by her family as a fun and loving person with an outgoing nature and a distinct laugh. Her mother, Celina Pena, described her as a beautiful daughter, sister, and friend who had attended Carroll High School and worked as an eyelash technician. Her life was tragically cut short on February 5, 2023, just one day after she celebrated her 20th birthday.
That Sunday night, around 11:30 p.m., a violent
confrontation erupted in the 2700 block of Persimmon Street. According to Corpus Christi police, several people arrived at a residence in two vehicles, and a disturbance with the people at the home escalated into a shootout. Investigators determined that the parties knew each other and that individuals from "both parties" discharged firearms. During the exchange of gunfire, Alexis was fatally shot and died at the scene. Four other people were also wounded but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
In the days following the shooting, police arrested three suspects. Freddy Davis, 19, and Attrieon Sherrill, 22, were taken into custody and charged with murder. A third man, 22-year-old Jacob Salomon, was also charged with murder after being medically cleared for injuries he sustained during the incident.
The legal process that followed has been complex and painful for Alexis's family. During the proceedings, Salomon was released on bond and required to wear an ankle monitor. Alexis's mother has been a constant presence at court hearings, expressing the deep emotional toll on her family. "It just hurts having to redo everything all over again," she said, pleading for those involved to be honest. "You know what you did and just be honest.” In a significant turn, the Nueces County District Attorney's Office dismissed the murder charges against all three men in July 2024, announcing plans to present the case to a grand jury for further evaluation.
Later, however, the case against Jacob Salomon was revived. Prosecutors reduced the charges against him, and a judge has scheduled his jury trial to begin on March 16. The current status of any charges against Freddy Davis and Attrieon Sherrill has not been publicly updated.
