Miriam Lopez, a 38-year-old Hispanic woman, was tragically killed on April 2, 2018, in her home in Corpus Christi, Texas. The incident occurred in the London Estates subdivision, just outside the city limits. Miriam and her husband, Arturo Lopez, 39, were found shot to death in their bedroom. The Nueces County Sheriff's Office initially received a call about a possible murder-suicide, but upon arrival, it became clear that the couple had been victims of a violent home invasion.
The
investigation revealed that six men had planned and executed the home invasion, believing there were drugs and a large sum of money in the Lopez residence. The suspects, identified as Ausencio Acosta Jr., Ismael Castillo, Jordan Gosson, Robert Angel Lopez Jr., Adrian Olivarez, and Trebor Campbell Wheeler, were all eventually arrested and charged with capital murder. According to arrest affidavits, the men broke into the home through a glass patio door, each armed with a weapon. They were led by Acosta, who was the cousin of the Lopezes' son. The plan was to rob the home, and if met with resistance, to kill the occupants.
During the invasion, Arturo Lopez was shot at least twice, and Miriam Lopez was shot at least once. Their son, who was home at the time, hid in a bathroom and later identified one of the suspects, Trebor Wheeler, by his distinctive hazel eyes and red hair. The couple's young daughter was also in the home but was unharmed, as per the instructions given to the intruders by Acosta.
The legal proceedings following the murders saw all six suspects facing capital murder charges. By April 20, 2018, all six men were in custody. Trebor Wheeler, 18, was arrested in Killeen, Texas, and later extradited to Nueces County. Ausencio Acosta Jr., 20, was also arrested and identified as a key planner of the robbery. Ismael Castillo, 31, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in San Antonio. The other suspects, Jordan Gosson, Robert Angel Lopez Jr., and Adrian Olivarez, were similarly detained.
In March 2022, four of the six men accepted plea deals in the 94th District Court. Trebor Wheeler, Robert Lopez Jr., Adrian Olivarez, and Ausencio Acosta pleaded guilty to various charges, including aggravated robbery, organized criminal activity, and murder. In exchange for their guilty pleas, the capital murder charges were dismissed. Wheeler was sentenced to 20 years for each charge, to be served consecutively. Lopez received six years for each charge, Olivarez was sentenced to 10 years for each charge, and Acosta received 14 years for each charge. Jordan Gosson opted to take his case to trial, while Ismael Castillo was already serving a life sentence for a separate murder.
The tragic deaths of Miriam and Arturo Lopez left a lasting impact on their family and the community. The case highlighted the dangers of home invasions and the devastating consequences of violent crime. The legal outcomes provided some measure of justice for the victims' family, but the loss of Miriam and Arturo Lopez remains a profound tragedy.
