On March 9, 2023, 37-year-old Robert Diaz, an Uber driver from San Antonio, Texas, was fatally shot while on duty. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. near the intersection of Gibbs-Sprawl Road and Castle Cross Drive on the city's Northeast Side. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and observed Diaz's SUV veering into oncoming lanes before coming to a stop on a sidewalk. A man was seen exiting the vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot.
Upon arrival, San Antonio Police officers found Diaz unresponsive in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered several shell casings and noted that a phone mounted on the dashboard indicated an active Uber ride. The passenger's name associated with the ride was Dominique Croom.
Through witness interviews and video evidence, investigators identified 30-year-old Dominique Croom as the primary suspect. Footage showed a man matching Croom's description running from the scene immediately after the shooting. Additionally, receipts and other evidence linked Croom to the crime. He was arrested on March 16, 2023, and charged with murder and criminal trespass. At the time of his arrest, Croom was held in the Bexar County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not disclosed any prior relationship between Diaz and Croom. The tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety of rideshare drivers in the area, prompting discussions on measures to protect drivers and passengers alike.
