On March 21, 2023, at approximately 12:28 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots near the 800 block of Montopolis Drive in southeast Austin. Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Jacob Anthony Soto lying unresponsive in the middle of the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Soto was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.
During the investigation, officers found a trail of blood leading away from the crime scene. Subsequently, they were informed that a second individual with gunshot injuries had checked into a local hospital; this person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was interviewed by the police. Detectives determined that a third individual had been with Soto prior to the shooting. It is believed that all three men had arranged a meeting, which escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in the fatal shooting of Soto.
As of the latest available information, no charges have been filed, and no suspects are in custody. The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone possessing information about the incident to contact APD at 512-974-TIPS. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Capital Area Crime Stoppers, with the possibility of a reward up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
This case marked Austin's 19th homicide of the year. Community members have expressed concerns regarding safety in the area, noting that while the neighborhood has seen improvements over the years, incidents like this underscore the need for continued vigilance and effective law enforcement.
