On March 30, 2023, Darrell "BTB Savage" Gentry, a 26-year-old rapper from Houston, Texas, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in the River Oaks area of Houston. The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. near the 2100 block of Mid Lane. Gentry was found deceased at the scene inside his white Mercedes-Benz, which had been riddled with bullet holes.
Prior to his death, Gentry had gained attention for his music career and a recent interview where he discussed a self-defense shooting
involving an attempted robbery at his San Antonio residence in February 2023. In the interview, he detailed how he and his girlfriend fought off the intruders, resulting in the death of one of the assailants. Gentry's recounting of the event, along with photos he posted on social media showing him standing in a blood-stained apartment, sparked controversy and discussions about self-defense and its portrayal in media.
Following Gentry's death, the Houston Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. Investigators are exploring possible connections between the San Antonio incident and Gentry's subsequent murder, considering the potential for retaliation. The investigation remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in solving the case.
