On April 10, 2023, 34-year-old Fatorma Gabba Jr. was fatally shot in a strip center parking lot at 9648 Beechnut Street in southwest Houston. The incident began as an argument between Gabba and another individual, escalating into a physical altercation during which the assailant drew a firearm and shot Gabba multiple times. Despite attempting to seek help by running to a nearby business, Gabba collapsed at the entrance and was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics.

A woman present at the scene sustained injuries during the shooting. She was transported to a hospital for treatment; authorities believe she may have been an innocent bystander.

The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jernell Madison, fled the scene in a silver SUV of unknown make and model. On May 4, 2023, Houston police charged Madison with murder in connection with Gabba's death. As of that date, Madison remained at large, and authorities released a 2020 booking photo along with surveillance images in an effort to locate him.

Gabba's father, who brought his family to the United States from Sierra Leone for a better life, expressed sorrow over his son's associations, suggesting they may have contributed to the tragic outcome. Friends remembered Gabba as a protective figure within their community.

Houston police continue to seek information regarding Madison's whereabouts. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or to speak anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
