Her younger sister, Sofia Mendoza, aged 8, was also among the victims. The sisters were students at Cox Elementary School in Wylie Independent School District, where Daniela was a fourth grader and Sofia a second grader. Their mother, Ilda, sustained injuries during the incident and was hospitalized in critical condition.
The perpetrator of this heinous act was identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia. Garcia arrived at the mall armed with an AR-15-style rifle and opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including the Mendoza sisters, and injuries to several others. A police officer who was at the scene for an unrelated call responded promptly and fatally shot Garcia, preventing further loss of life.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Wylie ISD community mourned the loss of Daniela and Sofia. Cox Elementary School's principal, Krista Wilson, described the sisters as "rays of sunshine" who brought joy to those around them. The school community honored their memory by wearing yellow, the girls' favorite color, and establishing memorials with flowers, toys, and balloons at the school.
Investigations into Garcia's background revealed a disturbing online presence filled with hate-filled rants and extremist ideologies. He had expressed white supremacist and neo-Nazi beliefs on social media platforms, along with misogynistic and anti-Semitic sentiments. Despite these alarming indicators, Garcia had no significant criminal record that might have predicted such violent behavior.
The tragic loss of Daniela and Sofia Mendoza, along with the other victims, has had a profound impact on the Allen and Wylie communities. Memorial services and vigils were held to honor their memories, and support poured in for the affected families.
