On May 6, 2023, eight-year-old Sofia Mendoza and her eleven-year-old sister, Daniela, were tragically killed during a mass shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets mall in Allen, Texas. The sisters, both students at Cox Elementary School in Sachse—Daniela in fourth grade and Sofia in second—were described by their principal as "rays of sunshine" who brought joy to those around them.
