In the early hours of June 8, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in rural Edinburg, Texas, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Agustin Anguiano Vega. At approximately 3:05 a.m., Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 6700 block of Argentine Road. Upon arrival, they found Vega leaning against a black Chevrolet pickup truck, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Standing nearby was 34-year-old Antonio Garcia Garza, who admitted to shooting Vega following a physical altercation between the two men.
A witness at the scene reported seeing Vega and Garza standing near each other before hearing gunshots. She observed Vega had been shot and Garza running into the house holding a handgun. The witness later provided deputies with a black handgun that Garza had placed on the kitchen table after the shooting. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the property, collecting evidence related to the incident, and discovered illegal drugs inside Garza's black Chevrolet truck.
Vega was transported to McAllen Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:43 a.m. Justice of the Peace Jason Pena ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Garza was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana. His bond was set at $500,000 for the murder charge, with additional amounts for the drug-related offenses. He was subsequently booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.
In August 2023, a Hidalgo County grand jury indicted Garza on charges of murder and possession of cocaine. He was scheduled for arraignment later that month. Garza had been released on bond from the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on July 11, after posting a total of $256,000 in bonds.
