On June 29, 2023, at approximately 5 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 3900 block of Lakeview Cutoff Street in Pine Forest, near Vidor, Texas. A woman had reported that a man, identified as 48-year-old Kenneth Edward Walhood, was making threats to harm her. Fearing for her safety, she locked herself in a bathroom and managed to escape through a window before deputies arrived.
Upon arrival, deputies attempted to establish communication with Walhood using a public address system, but he did not respond. Given the circumstances, a SWAT team was deployed to the scene. After setting up a perimeter, they entered the home and discovered Walhood deceased in a hallway leading to the master bedroom, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Orange County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 4, Rodney Price, pronounced him dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy.
The woman involved in the incident reported hearing a gunshot as she fled the residence but was unsure of its origin. She was unharmed during the escape. The investigation into the events leading up to Walhood's death is ongoing. No arrests have been made, and there are no suspects being sought in connection with this case, as the evidence currently indicates that Walhood's death was self-inflicted.
