On April 22, 2024, Houston police discovered the body of 45-year-old Jennifer Ramirez in a shallow grave behind an apartment complex in the 11000 block of Fuqua Street. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined that she had died from a gunshot wound.
The investigation led authorities to Derek Fischer, 31, who was identified as Ramirez's boyfriend. Evidence and witness statements pointed to Fischer as the primary suspect.
He was arrested on April 27, 2024, and charged with murder and tampering with evidence.
Prior to her death, Ramirez had reported to Houston police in January that Fischer had threatened to kill her. Additionally, Fischer was serving deferred adjudication for a separate family assault case at the time of his arrest.
Ramirez's family revealed that she had struggled with addiction and had been estranged from them for about a decade. Despite these challenges, her family had hoped for her recovery and return.
Fischer's arrest brought some relief to Ramirez's family, who had feared that her killer might evade justice. He is currently held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 30, 2024.
