On the evening of July 2, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., seven-year-old Kyrie Barnes was in bed playing a video game on his phone in his family's second-story apartment on Rothington Road in Dallas, Texas. Suddenly, a bullet pierced through the wall, striking him. Neighbors reported hearing what they initially thought were fireworks, followed by several gunshots.
Emergency responders transported Kyrie to Baylor University Medical Center, where he was stabilized before being transferred to Dallas Children’s Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, Kyrie succumbed to his injuries on July 6, 2023.
In the aftermath, Kyrie's mother, Danielle Brown, expressed profound grief and called for justice, emphasizing her son's innocence and the senselessness of the tragedy. She recounted that they had recently moved to the area and were preparing to celebrate the Fourth of July. Kyrie, described as always happy and a fan of Spider-Man, was set to begin second grade at Pleasant Grove Elementary School.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Dallas Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), launched an investigation into the shooting. They determined that the gunfire originated from outside the apartment, with multiple shell casings from different firearms found in the parking lot. However, as of December 2024, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The ATF has offered a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, highlighting the importance of community assistance in solving the case. Despite these efforts, the investigation remains open, and Kyrie's family continues to seek answers and justice for their beloved child.
