Arturo Alexis Sauceda was an 18-year-old Hispanic student and a beloved member of his community in Santa Rosa, Texas. A rising senior at Santa Rosa High School, Arturo was a starting lineman for the Warriors football team, wearing jersey number 68. He was described by his quarterback as "the light to the team," someone who could lift his friends' spirits on a bad day.
His coach noted that Arturo had made an impact on everyone and would be dearly missed.
On the night of July 22, 2023, a domestic violence incident turned fatal in San Perlita. At around 10:30 p.m., Arturo’s stepfather, Jose Villalobos, was threatening Arturo’s mother, Lidia, with a gun outside their home on 7th Street. Arturo went outside to check on his mother. After she assured him she was okay and he turned to go back inside, Villalobos opened fire, shooting both of them. Arturo was fatally wounded, and his mother was left in critical condition.
Deputies with the Willacy County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and arrested Villalobos. The community was left heartbroken by the sudden loss of the young football player. The Santa Rosa Independent School District offered condolences and provided counseling services to students and staff. In his honor, the football team named Arturo an honorary captain for the upcoming season, wore his number on their helmets, and held a candlelight vigil at the school’s stadium.
Jose Villalobos was charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His trial began in August 2025. During the proceedings, jurors heard testimony from relatives, including Arturo's mother, who said Villalobos had a history of pointing a weapon at her. She recounted the events of the shooting, explaining that her son was shot after he turned to walk away.
On August 21, 2025, after three hours of deliberation, the jury found Jose Villalobos guilty on both counts. A judge subsequently sentenced him to serve 40 years in prison. During the victim impact statements, Arturo’s younger sister and father spoke about their devastating loss. “This isn’t going to bring my son back,” his father said, expressing a pain that the verdict could not heal. The case was closed with the conviction and sentencing in August 2025.
