On the evening of September 20, 2023, in Brownsville, Texas, 51-year-old Alfredo Zapata was fatally shot during a domestic dispute. The incident occurred around 7:00 PM at a residence in the 1900 block of East Tyler Street. Upon arrival, Brownsville police officers found Zapata with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a monetary disagreement between Zapata and his 74-year-old stepfather, Juan Rodriguez Valencia. Zapata's mother, who was present during the altercation, called 911 to report that Valencia had shot her son over the financial dispute. Following the shooting, Valencia fled the scene and was later confirmed to have crossed the international bridge into Matamoros, Mexico.
