On October 16, 2023, at approximately 1:26 a.m., Austin Police Department officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man in the 2200 block of East Riverside Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered 28-year-old Jader Francisco Tinoco-Salgado with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Tinoco-Salgado had been involved in an argument with his cousin, 35-year-old Elvin Salvador Tinoco-Orosco.
The dispute escalated, culminating in Tinoco-Orosco shooting Tinoco-Salgado multiple times. Witnesses reported hearing the argument and subsequent gunshots.
Tinoco-Orosco was detained at the scene by responding officers. Surveillance footage showed him returning to his truck after the shooting and then placing Tinoco-Salgado on top of him shortly before police arrived. A handgun was found in the passenger seat of his vehicle. He has been charged with first-degree felony murder and remains in custody.
This incident marked Austin's 54th homicide of 2023. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information or video footage related to the case to contact the Austin Police Department's Homicide Unit or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
