On November 11, 2023, Senior Police Officer Jorge Ignacio Pastore, aged 38, was fatally shot during a hostage situation in Austin, Texas. The incident began around 2:49 a.m. when a woman called 911 from a residence on Bernoulli Drive, reporting that she was being stabbed. Upon arrival, Austin Police Department (APD) officers encountered gunfire from the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ahmed Mohamed Nassar, who was armed with a rifle and tactical gear.
The officers retreated and summoned the SWAT team for assistance.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., the SWAT team attempted a hostage rescue by breaching the bedroom door. Nassar immediately opened fire, striking Officer Pastore and another officer. In the ensuing exchange, officers returned fire, fatally wounding Nassar. Tragically, two other individuals inside the residence, identified as 63-year-old Eyman Ahmed Elnemrnassar and 32-year-old Riad Mohamed Nassar, were found deceased with fatal injuries. A third victim had managed to escape earlier and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Officer Pastore was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The second injured officer was reported to be in stable condition. Officer Pastore had served with the Austin Police Department for four years, joining in 2019. He was a patrol officer who also served in APD’s Honor Guard, SWAT Gold Team, Counter Assault Strike Team (CAST), and Special Response Team (SRT). He is survived by his wife, two stepsons, parents, and two sisters.
The suspect, Ahmed Nassar, was found deceased at the scene following the shootout with police. The investigation revealed that Nassar had a history of violence and was heavily armed during the incident, wearing body armor and possessing multiple firearms. A search warrant executed at the residence uncovered body armor, protective plates, ballistic helmets, night vision goggles, firearms, ammunition, and other tactical gear, indicating a high level of preparation for violent confrontation.
The tragic events of November 11, 2023, have deeply impacted the Austin community, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Officer Pastore's dedication to service and his ultimate sacrifice are remembered and honored by his colleagues, family, and the citizens he served. Funeral services were held at Germania Insurance Amphitheater, with police honors rendered in recognition of his bravery and commitment.
