On March 24, 2018, Jesus Rodolfo Solis-Lopez, a Hispanic male, was tragically shot and killed in North Austin, Texas. The incident occurred at 605 Masterson Pass, where Austin Police Department officers responded to multiple calls regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Solis-Lopez with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, legs, and head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Solis-Lopez was the new boyfriend of the suspect's ex-girlfriend.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Imanol Cardenas-Medina, also a Hispanic male, was charged with murder, a first-degree felony. According to the affidavit, Cardenas-Medina had arranged to meet his ex-girlfriend to hand over their 4-year-old daughter. However, he insisted that she bring her new boyfriend, Solis-Lopez, to the meeting. The three of them talked in the parking lot for about 20 minutes before Cardenas-Medina pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and began shooting at Solis-Lopez.
Cardenas-Medina's ex-girlfriend recounted that he said, "I told you how this was going to end. I loved you and you left me for him," before he started shooting. After the shooting, Cardenas-Medina put the gun down, walked over to his ex-girlfriend, and asked her to take care of their daughter. He then waited for the police to arrive and was taken into custody without incident. Cardenas-Medina later told the police that he had purchased the gun months ago out of anger after his ex-girlfriend broke up with him and brought it with him "just in case."
The case proceeded to court, where Cardenas-Medina pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to 32 years in prison for the murder of Jesus Rodolfo Solis-Lopez. The tragic incident highlighted the dangers of domestic disputes and the devastating consequences of gun violence.
