On November 23, 2023, Specialist (Spc.) Andrew Fredrick Blakely, a 24-year-old soldier from Ennis, Texas, was found deceased near Laredo, Texas. At the time of his passing, Blakely was serving with Company Bravo, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Infantry Regiment, in support of Operation Lone Star Task Force Center.
Laredo police responded to reports of an incident at Chacon Bat Park, located at 1104 S. Meadow St., shortly before 1 a.m. on November 23.
Upon arrival, first responders from the Laredo Fire Department discovered Blakely with fatal injuries, including a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have classified his death as a suicide.
Blakely's death is part of a concerning pattern among Texas National Guard members deployed along the border. Since the initiation of Operation Lone Star in 2021, there have been multiple reported suicides among deployed guardsmen. This has prompted increased attention to mental health resources and suicide prevention efforts within the military community.

Funeral services for Spc. Blakely were held on December 15, 2023, at Lewis Funeral Home in San Antonio, Texas. The visitation took place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at noon.
