On December 3, 2023, 15-year-old Payton Frank Pesina tragically lost his life in an accidental shooting during a family hunting trip in Presidio County, Texas. The incident occurred in a well-known hunting area along Highway 67 between Presidio and Shafter. While preparing rifles for the day's activities, Payton accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in a fatal chest wound.
Following the accident, family members, with an escort from the Presidio County Sheriff's Department, transported Payton toward medical assistance. Marfa EMS met the family en route to Alpine, where Payton was pronounced dead upon arrival at Big Bend Regional Medical Center.
Payton was a sophomore at Grandfalls-Royalty High School, known for his kindness, generosity, and vibrant sense of humor. He excelled academically and was an active member of the school's football team, wearing jersey number 6. His passing deeply affected the school community, which remembered him as a beloved student whose warmth and bright spirit touched many lives.
An investigation into the incident was conducted by local authorities and turned over to the Texas Rangers. The Presidio County Sheriff's Office described the event as a tragic and heartbreaking accident, emphasizing the importance of proper firearms safety and training to prevent such tragedies. No arrests were made, and there were no suspects, as the shooting was determined to be accidental.
