Prior to this tragedy, on December 14, 2023, Fannie had reported to the Houston Police Department concerns about her marriage, specifically that her husband was tracking her movements and that she was preparing to file for divorce. She did not report any physical abuse at that time, and police provided her with a list of domestic violence resources. Eleven days later, she was found dead in her home.
Fannie's mother, Rosa Salinas, described Hernandez as controlling and obsessive, stating that he restricted Fannie's social interactions and monitored her activities. Salinas recounted a prior incident where Hernandez brandished a gun during an argument, threatening himself and frightening Fannie and their children. Salinas urged her daughter to leave the relationship, emphasizing the psychological control Hernandez exerted over her.
