Jessica Ruiz, a 20-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on March 10, 2021, in Houston, Texas. She was killed in a quadruple shooting at an apartment complex on Ranchester Drive in southwest Houston. The incident occurred when Jessica and her 21-year-old brother, Luis Ruiz, along with three other people, got into a confrontation with two men in a gold or brown sedan. The men initially left the scene but returned shortly after and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Jessica, Luis, and 55-year-old Josafat Ocampo Mesa, a relative of the Ruiz siblings. An 18-year-old woman who was also present at the scene survived the shooting and was rushed to the hospital.

Following the tragic incident, the Harris County District Attorney's Office charged 22-year-old Roger Salazar with capital murder. Authorities believe that Salazar "intentionally and knowingly" caused the deaths of Jessica and Luis Ruiz with a firearm. The investigation revealed that the shooting was unprovoked and completely senseless, according to Houston police. The surviving sister of Jessica and Luis set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for their funeral expenses and to honor the siblings who "took care of one another" and were "always together".

The case remains under investigation, and the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division, along with Crime Stoppers, continues to seek information from the public to bring those responsible to justice. The loss of Jessica and Luis Ruiz has deeply affected their family and community, and efforts to find justice for them continue.
