On January 19, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Garland Police Department officers responded to a reported disturbance involving a weapon at an apartment located in the 3500 block of Easton Meadows Drive in Garland, Texas. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals inside the apartment suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified by the Medical Examiner as 20-year-old Treton Butler.
The second victim survived and remained hospitalized as of the following morning. Preliminary investigations by the Garland Police indicated that the suspect or suspects were known to the victims. However, authorities were actively working to identify and locate those responsible for the shooting. In an effort to gather more information, the police encouraged anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward, offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established by Cherylyn ONeal to support funeral and memorial expenses for Treton, affectionately known as "Tuba Trent" Butler. The campaign highlighted the impact of his loss on the community and sought assistance to honor his memory.
As of December 2024, there have been no publicly reported arrests or identification of suspects in connection with the death of Treton Butler. The Garland Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with information to contact them directly or through Garland Crime Stoppers, where tips can be submitted anonymously.
