On May 22, 2019, Heng Lam, a 30-year-old male of Asian ethnicity, was tragically shot and killed during a robbery at a convenience store in Garland, Texas. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. when two armed suspects entered the store and demanded money from the clerks. During the robbery, Lam was shot and later transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Garland Police Department launched an extensive investigation, utilizing surveillance video and
forensic evidence to identify the suspects. Within days, they arrested Luis Alejandro Espinoza, 18, and Emmanuel Martinez, 18, both of whom were charged with capital murder. The investigation revealed that Espinoza and Martinez had covered their faces during the robbery, but their identities were confirmed through the video footage and other evidence.
In April 2022, a Dallas County court sentenced both Espinoza and Martinez to life in prison without the possibility of parole for their roles in Lam's death. The Garland Police Department, along with detectives and forensic investigators, worked meticulously on the case, collaborating with prosecutors from the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office to ensure justice was served.
The case highlighted the dedication and thoroughness of law enforcement in Garland, as well as the severe consequences for those who commit violent crimes. The community mourned the loss of Heng Lam, a hardworking individual whose life was cut short by a senseless act of violence.
