On February 25, 2024, 17-year-old Myesha McCants was fatally shot at a Motel 6 located in the 3900 block of South Jack Kultgen Expressway in Waco, Texas. Responding to a call at approximately 1:39 a.m., Waco Police officers found McCants suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
At the scene, 18-year-old Jada Millwood was present and cooperated with the initial investigation.
Witnesses reported that Millwood had been recklessly handling a firearm, loading and unloading it, and pointing it around the room. According to an arrest affidavit, Millwood stated that she had the gun in her hand and turned to face McCants, who then grabbed the weapon, causing it to discharge. The bullet struck McCants, leading to her death.
Millwood was arrested at the scene and charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony. She was booked into the McLennan County Jail, with bond set at $35,000. In May 2024, a McLennan County Grand Jury indicted Millwood on the manslaughter charge. As of that time, she remained in custody awaiting trial.
This incident was one of three homicides that occurred within a 48-hour period in Waco, prompting concern among local law enforcement and the community. Waco Police Chief Sheryl Victorian emphasized the importance of community involvement in preventing such tragedies and urged residents to assist in efforts to maintain public safety.
