On March 26, 2024, at approximately 1:25 a.m., Houston police responded to a shooting incident at an apartment complex located at 5950 Antoine Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered 66-year-old Jorish Dwight Sherman inside his residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical services transported Sherman to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators quickly identified Sherman's stepdaughter, 34-year-old Darneisha Hall, as the primary suspect in the shooting. According to reports, Hall arrived at Sherman's apartment seeking shelter, as she had been experiencing homelessness. A witness inside the apartment, Sherman's daughter, recounted hearing a knock on the door followed by an argument between Sherman and Hall. As Sherman opened the door, Hall allegedly produced a firearm and shot him in the face.
Following the shooting, Hall was located by police at a nearby bus stop. She was found in possession of a 9-millimeter handgun, which matched the shell casings recovered at the crime scene. Hall was arrested and charged with murder and unlawful carry of a weapon by a felon in the 487th State District Court. Her bond was set at $400,000, with conditions including 24-hour house arrest and the requirement to wear a GPS ankle monitor if released.
Court records indicate that Hall has a criminal history dating back to 2008, including a previous conviction for felony possession of a weapon in 2021. Her attorney has stated that Hall has a history of mental health issues and plans to request a mental health evaluation.
