The event occurred during a family gathering on Easter Sunday in the 1900 block of 36th Street. According to police reports, the gathering was disrupted when three vehicles arrived, and at least three individuals armed with rifles began firing into the residence. The occupants of the home returned fire, leading to a brief but deadly exchange.
The confrontation was reportedly sparked by a domestic disturbance earlier that day. A physical altercation had taken place involving a family member, which escalated tensions between the involved parties. In response, members of the Bermea family, including Johnny and Jeremy, armed themselves and confronted the individuals at the residence where the shooting occurred. The ensuing gunfight lasted approximately two minutes, during which both Johnny and Jeremy sustained fatal injuries. Additionally, 48-year-old Jose Lopez was seriously injured and transported to University Medical Center for treatment.
In the aftermath of the incident, law enforcement arrested several individuals connected to the shooting. On April 3, 2024, authorities took into custody 19-year-old Johnny Bermea Jr., who was charged with aggravated assault. Alongside him, 37-year-old Henry Bermea and 36-year-old Erica Jimenez were arrested and charged with abandoning or endangering a child, as they had brought a one-year-old and a 15-year-old to the scene of the confrontation. All three were held on bonds of $300,000 each. Subsequently, on April 5, 21-year-old Andrew Espinosa was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the events.
