On June 18, 2024, at approximately 5:12 p.m., 28-year-old McAllen resident Janet Vichique was fatally shot in the parking lot of a convenience store located in the 2300 block of Maple Avenue. The assailant, identified as her boyfriend, 30-year-old Edinburg resident Fortunato Barrera Jr., approached her vehicle, opened the driver's side door, and fired multiple shots, resulting in her immediate death.
Tragically, her 3-year-old daughter was present in the backseat during the incident but was unharmed.
Prior to this event, Vichique had obtained a protective order against Barrera due to his stalking behavior. Despite this legal measure, Barrera confronted her on the day of the shooting. Following the incident, witnesses provided authorities with a description of Barrera's vehicle, leading to his apprehension in the 3600 block of North Bicentennial Boulevard. Upon arrest, Barrera reportedly stated, "Just take me already, you know what I did."
Barrera was charged with murder, violation of a protective order, and abandoning or endangering a child. During his arraignment, his bond was set at $11,250,000. Subsequent investigations revealed that Barrera had a history of stalking Vichique, leading to his arrest earlier in June 2024. Despite the protective order issued against him, he continued to harass her, culminating in the fatal shooting.
In September 2024, a grand jury indicted Barrera on charges including murder, violation of a protective order, child endangerment, and stalking. He remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center, with his arraignment scheduled for October 2024. The community has expressed profound grief over Vichique's death, highlighting concerns about domestic violence and the enforcement of protective orders.
Vichique is remembered as a loving mother and cherished member of the McAllen community. Her obituary reflects on her warmth and kindness, noting that she touched countless lives and left behind cherished memories that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her.
