On June 18, 2024, at approximately 5:12 p.m., 28-year-old McAllen resident Janet Vichique was fatally shot in the parking lot of a convenience store located in the 2300 block of Maple Avenue. The assailant, identified as her boyfriend, 30-year-old Edinburg resident Fortunato Barrera Jr., approached her vehicle, opened the driver's side door, and fired multiple shots, resulting in her immediate death.
