On the night of her death, Ashley's stepfather, Cruz Orlando Piñon, engaged in a heated argument with her mother, Berenice Garcia, over access to Ashley's phone.
The argument escalated, and Piñon, in a fit of rage, shot and killed Ashley and her mother before turning the gun on himself. The incident occurred in front of responding police officers who had arrived at the scene to investigate the disturbance. Ashley's 13-year-old stepsister was also injured during the shooting but survived and was later transported to a hospital for treatment.
The tragic event led to a swift police response, and the investigation concluded that Piñon died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other suspects were identified, and no further arrests were made in connection with Ashley's death. The community mourned the loss of the young girl, and her school organized counseling services for students affected by the incident. A GoFundMe account was also created to help cover the family's medical and funeral expenses.
Ashley's memory continues to be honored by her friends, teammates, and the community. Her teammates wore ribbons and stickers on their helmets during the softball season to remember her, and a mariachi sendoff concert was held to raise funds for the family.
