On July 12, 2024, 19-year-old mother of two, Zenri McGee, was fatally shot at the Clarion Inn & Suites DFW North in Irving, Texas. Responding to multiple noise complaints around 8:50 p.m., Irving police arrived to find McGee critically injured from gunshot wounds. She was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The incident began as a physical altercation involving McGee, another woman, and 30-year-old suspect, Cedric Campbell, inside a hotel room. According to police reports, Campbell forced McGee to her knees, placed her in a chokehold from behind, and then shot her in the chest. He also allegedly pointed the gun at the other woman's head but did not fire.
After the shooting, Campbell attempted to flee the scene on foot. Police apprehended him hiding in a nearby drainage ditch. He was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
McGee's death has left her family, including her two young sons aged 1 and 3, in deep mourning. Her sister, Breanna Bettis, expressed devastation over the loss, noting McGee's dedication to her children and her vibrant personality. Bettis has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses and support McGee’s children.
The Irving Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, seeking to piece together the events that led to McGee's tragic death.
