On July 20, 2024, 20-year-old Cesar Peralta was fatally shot at the Thorntree Apartments near Uvalde Road in East Houston, Texas. Responding to reports of gunfire, Harris County Sheriff's deputies discovered Peralta in the apartment complex parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations led to the arrest of 21-year-old actor Akili McDowell, known for his roles in television series such as "David Makes Man" and "Billions."
Authorities allege that McDowell and Peralta engaged in a physical altercation, during which McDowell reportedly drew a firearm and shot Peralta multiple times before fleeing the scene.
McDowell was apprehended on August 1, 2024, and charged with murder. He was booked into the Harris County Jail with bond set at $400,000. In addition to the murder charge, McDowell faces a separate theft charge related to an alleged incident in July 2023 involving stolen headphones, for which bond was set at $210.
The motive behind the altercation remains under investigation. McDowell's manager described the situation as "unfortunate" and expressed prayers for all parties involved. As the legal process unfolds, McDowell is scheduled for court appearances concerning both the theft and murder charges.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Peralta's death and have urged anyone with additional information to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit.
