On July 24, 2024, 56-year-old Damon VanCleef Spiller was found deceased in his room at Harmony House, a temporary housing facility for individuals experiencing homelessness in Houston, Texas. Initially, there were no apparent signs indicating the cause of death. However, an autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences later revealed that Spiller had died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators believe that the fatal shot was fired from the vicinity of the East Freeway (Interstate 10) ramp merging from the North Freeway (Interstate 45) lanes. The bullet is thought to have traveled through the wall of Spiller's room, striking him as he slept. This tragic incident likely occurred between July 20 and July 21, but Spiller's body was not discovered until July 24. The delay in discovery was due to the absence of immediate signs of foul play, and no one inside Harmony House reportedly heard the gunshot.
At the time of his death, Spiller was striving to rebuild his life. He had moved into Harmony House in April and secured employment cutting grass. Described as one of the facility's hardest workers, he was known for his punctuality, focus, and resilience. His son, LaCraig Joseph, noted that Spiller was working to improve his life and strengthen relationships with his children and grandchildren.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Spiller's death. The Houston Police Department is actively seeking information from anyone who may have observed suspicious activity near the East Freeway ramp from the North Freeway lanes on July 20 or July 21. A memorial service for Damon VanCleef Spiller was held on August 31, 2024, at Barkley Memorial Funeral Home in Houston. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, siblings, and a host of other relatives and friends who continue to mourn his untimely passing.
