On the night of August 2, 2024, Vanity Williams, a 34-year-old Black transgender woman, was fatally shot in the lobby of her apartment building at 1711 Caroline Street in downtown Houston, Texas. Houston Police Department officers responded to a shooting call around 11:10 p.m. and found Ms. Williams unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Ms.
Williams was an Air Force veteran who had recently begun nursing school with aspirations of opening a medical spa. She was known for her vibrant personality, fluency in Spanish and Japanese, and her passion for makeup, nail art, and fashion.
In the days following the shooting, investigators identified 26-year-old Tristian Sanders as the suspect in Ms. Williams' murder. Sanders, who was reportedly known to Ms. Williams, fled Houston and was located in Luling, Louisiana. On August 9, 2024, a SWAT team arrested Sanders without incident at a residence in the 600 Block of Lac Verret Drive. He was charged with murder and booked into the St. Charles Parish Jail, awaiting extradition to Harris County, Texas.
Friends and community members remembered Ms. Williams as a loyal and straightforward individual who created a safe space for everyone. Hope Giselle, a friend, expressed disbelief over the tragedy, stating, "She created and made a safe space for everybody, so to think that someone would want to hurt her and have a justified reason is something I cannot fathom." Another close friend, Johnáe Wright, described Ms. Williams as "my friend, my sister, my heart," emphasizing the profound impact she had on those around her.
Ms. Williams' death marked at least the 25th known violent killing of a transgender or gender-expansive person in the United States in 2024. Her passing underscored the ongoing violence faced by Black transgender women and sparked calls for systemic change to address transphobia, misogynoir, and gun violence.
