On June 11, 2008, the body of 48-year-old Marsha Lynn Mitchell was discovered in a field adjacent to a construction site at 2625 Reed Road in Houston, Texas. She was last seen alive on the evening of June 10, 2008, getting into a vehicle with an unidentified man at 12211 Fondren Road. An autopsy confirmed that Mitchell had been strangled. Despite initial investigative efforts, the case remained unsolved for over 15 years.
In 2022, advancements in DNA technology led to a breakthrough when a match was found in the FBI's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), linking Joshua Sinclair Owens to the crime. At the time of Mitchell's death, Owens was 19 years old. He was subsequently charged with murder in June 2023. Investigators believe that Owens sexually assaulted Mitchell before strangling her and disposing of her body behind the construction site.
While awaiting trial for Mitchell's murder, Owens orchestrated a drug-smuggling operation within the Harris County Jail, amassing nearly $30,000 in his commissary account from selling drugs to other inmates. He also faced charges of aggravated assault of a family member for attacking his girlfriend in 2022. In October 2024, Owens pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to 50 years in prison for each crime, with the sentences to run concurrently. As part of the plea agreement, he waived his right to appeal.
