Rhonda Tatum Lenear, a 45-year-old woman from Houston, Texas, tragically lost her life on May 19, 2021. She was killed by her husband, Dakari Lenear, in what was described as a domestic violence incident. Rhonda was an engineer who worked from home and was known to be a loving, bright, and vibrant person who had worked hard to keep her family together.
On the day of her death, Dakari Lenear, who did not have a stable job, was at home with Rhonda and their two teenage children.
According to reports, Dakari told his children to go outside and then entered the room where Rhonda was working with an assault rifle. He told Rhonda that if she wanted to pray, she needed to do it then because both of them would be dead by the end of the day. Rhonda bravely began recording the confrontation on her phone, trying to de-escalate the situation. Despite her efforts, Dakari shot her multiple times, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The couple's teenage children, who were home-schooled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, witnessed the incident and called 911 for help. When deputies arrived, they found Dakari in the open garage, and Rhonda was found lying on the living room floor. Dakari claimed that Rhonda attacked him with a knife, and he shot her in self-defense. However, this claim was disproved by the recording Rhonda made of her last moments.
Dakari Lenear was arrested and charged with murder. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 65 years in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. The case was investigated by the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit, and Dakari is currently serving his sentence in the Harris County Jail.
Rhonda Lenear's death has left a significant impact on her family and community. Her mother, Debra Tatum, expressed her grief and prayed for her family to find peace and strength in the aftermath of the tragedy. Rhonda's memory lives on as a loving mother and dedicated professional who worked tirelessly to support her family.
