On April 18, 1973, Jana Whatley, a 10-year-old girl from Houston, Texas, tragically lost her life in what became known as the "Red Elementary Rampage." Jana was walking home from school when she was shot by Larry Delon Casey, a 21-year-old man who went on a shooting spree that day. Casey, who was on probation for burglary, had a history of minor crimes and was reportedly upset after an argument with his girlfriend.
The rampage began when Casey shot and killed 86-year-old Beulah Davis in
her front yard. He then shot and killed 5-year-old Claire Patricia Jakubowski as she was riding her bicycle. Jana Whatley was shot and killed while walking home, and two other children, Lyn Tucker and Karen Kurtz, both 10 years old, were wounded but survived. Casey was arrested shortly after the shooting spree.
During his confession, Casey mentioned that the murder of his father in 1970 and the argument with his girlfriend were the triggers for his violent outburst. He admitted to having a "chip on his shoulder" and feeling angry at the world. Casey was convicted of murder in 1974 and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Despite accumulating good-time credit for a potential early release, his plans were derailed when he was charged with trying to hire a hitman to kill the prosecutor in his case and a former police officer.
The tragic death of Jana Whatley and the other victims of the Red Elementary Rampage left a lasting impact on the community and their families. Survivors and advocates continue to honor the victims and highlight the importance of victims' rights in the criminal justice system.
