On June 22, 2024, Karen Herrera, aged 43, was fatally shot in Houston, Texas, alongside her mother, Leonor Hernandez, 65, and her brother-in-law, Thomas Kupriakov, 38. The incident occurred at an apartment on Hammerly Boulevard, where Hernandez resided; Herrera and Kupriakov were visiting from out of town.
The suspect, 27-year-old Bryan J. Fernandez, who is Hernandez's son and Herrera's brother, called 911, claiming he had shot three intruders during a home invasion.
Upon arrival, Houston Police officers found the three victims deceased from gunshot wounds. After further investigation, authorities determined there was no home invasion and that the victims were, in fact, Fernandez's family members.
Fernandez was arrested and charged with capital murder for the deaths of his mother, sister, and brother-in-law. Court records indicate that Fernandez had a prior conviction for driving while intoxicated in 2019, resulting in a 180-day jail sentence. Additionally, police had responded to the apartment on two previous occasions for mental health-related calls, once in the previous year and again earlier in 2024.
During a court appearance, Fernandez was denied bond and remains in custody. Family members, including Carlos Flores, Fernandez's half-brother, expressed shock and grief over the incident, emphasizing the need for Fernandez to face the consequences of his actions.
