On September 14, 2024, at approximately 2:35 a.m., Dallas police responded to a shooting incident in the 2800 block of Burger Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 17-year-old Demaryae Dequan Hill-Young, a student at Lincoln High School, with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by Dallas Fire-Rescue, Hill-Young was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, both Hill-Young and the suspect, 22-year-old Rashad Earl Mayes, were present at a residence on Burger Avenue prior to the shooting. Mayes, who had a prior relationship with the homeowner, arrived around 2:20 a.m. and joined a group in a back bedroom. Shortly thereafter, Hill-Young went to another bedroom to rest, where two children, aged 7 and 13, were already asleep. Mayes allegedly entered this bedroom and shot Hill-Young multiple times in the head. The children present reported waking to find Mayes standing over the bed; he reportedly threatened them before leaving the room. A 15-year-old witness encountered Mayes, who allegedly warned him, "Don't snitch," and "Control your siblings" before departing the residence.
Following the incident, Mayes communicated with his ex-girlfriend, expressing anger and suspicion that she was involved with another man. On September 19, 2024, Mayes surrendered to authorities at the Dallas County Jail. He was charged with murder and is being held on a $1 million bond. The investigation into Hill-Young's death remains ongoing.
