Kylene Douglas, a funny, loving, and caring 41-year-old mother, was remembered by friends as someone who could light up any room. A woman of faith, she was deeply devoted to her family, especially her daughters. Friends said she was fighting for her life and freedom, trying to escape an abusive relationship and seeking the protection of the courts in the weeks leading up to her death.

Less than a month before she was killed, on September 17, 2026, Kylene had filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order against Michael Patrick O'Riley II, the 39-year-old father of two of her four children. In her handwritten court statement, she described receiving vile text messages. She submitted screenshots of the threats, which included messages like, “I want you dead so bad,” and “If I could get away with it, I 200% would.” Another message read, “I hate you so much. I would not even go to your funeral.” A judge granted some temporary protections but denied others, citing insufficient evidence of physical abuse. O'Riley was served with the order on September 20. At a hearing on September 29, where Kylene appeared in person and O'Riley appeared by video, the temporary orders were reissued. When the judge asked O'Riley if he owned any firearms, he said he had none. Their next hearing was scheduled for October 15, a day she would not live to see.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the day before her hearing, Kylene called 911 from her apartment at the Kennedy Meadows complex on New York Ranch Road in Jackson, California. Around 12:20 a.m., she told a dispatcher, “He’s trying to shoot me.” The dispatcher then heard sounds consistent with gunfire and a male voice before the call disconnected. Jackson Police Department officers arrived to the sound of more apparent gunfire coming from inside the apartment.

The suspect, identified as Michael Patrick O'Riley II, called 911 himself, claiming he would not leave the apartment and that an explosive device was attached to the front door. After a brief standoff, a family member of O'Riley's persuaded him by phone to surrender peacefully. Officers from the Jackson Police Department, assisted by the Amador County Sheriff’s Office and police from Sutter Creek and Ione, entered the apartment. They found Kylene in a bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds. Her beloved rescue pit bull, Kilo, was also found shot and killed in the same room. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Kylene was pronounced dead at the scene. A couple living in the unit directly below later showed reporters a bullet hole in their bedroom ceiling from the shooting.

Michael Patrick O'Riley II was arrested and booked into the Amador County Jail without bail. On October 16, he was arraigned in Amador County Superior Court, where he pleaded not guilty to a series of felony charges: premeditated murder with an enhancement for discharging a firearm causing death, animal cruelty, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of ammunition by a felon. He also faced a misdemeanor charge for violating a domestic relations court order. Court records revealed O'Riley had two prior serious felony convictions that had resulted in prison sentences. The Amador County District Attorney’s Office stated it was committed to seeking justice and holding him "accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

In the wake of the tragedy, friends and community members created a memorial for Kylene and Kilo outside her apartment. A candlelight vigil was planned for the evening of October 26 on the basketball court of the apartment complex. A GoFundMe fundraiser was organized to help secure a future for her daughters, with the funds intended to be placed in a trust for their education, housing, and transportation. The organizer wrote, "Kylene deserved to be safe. Kylene deserved to be heard. Kylene deserved to live." As of October 2026, the investigation by the Jackson Police Department was ongoing. O'Riley's pre-preliminary hearing was scheduled for December 2, 2026. Anyone with information was asked to contact Detective Michelle Hopper at 209-223-1771.
