On the morning of September 17, 2024, Garland police responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Broadway Commons. Upon arrival, officers noticed that the front door had been forcibly opened and observed two small children inside the apartment. As they entered, they heard gunshots coming from a back bedroom. The officers took cover and worked swiftly to ensure the children's safety.
Shortly thereafter, 35-year-old Brodrick Earl Kennedy emerged from the bedroom and surrendered without incident.
Inside the bedroom, officers discovered two women with gunshot wounds. One victim, identified as 38-year-old Donnielle Lashay Kennedy, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, her mother, 58-year-old Shirley Jean Phillips, was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The two children found in the apartment were unharmed and were subsequently released to extended family members.
Brodrick Kennedy, the husband of Donnielle Kennedy, was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with capital murder and is currently held at the Garland Detention Center without bond. The investigation into the motive behind the shootings is ongoing. The Garland Police Department has expressed its commitment to supporting the grieving families during this difficult time.
