On March 10, 1985, Amanda Brown, a young White female from Garland, Texas, was abducted from her home. The circumstances of her disappearance were initially unclear, but her case would later be linked to a series of child abductions and murders committed by David Elliott Penton, a convicted serial killer and child predator. Penton's crimes spanned multiple states during the 1980s, primarily targeting young girls whom he abducted, assaulted, and murdered.

At the time of Amanda's abduction, Penton was already a fugitive. In November 1984, he had been charged with the manslaughter of his two-month-old son, Michael James Penton, in Killeen, Texas. After pleading guilty and receiving a five-year sentence, he was released on bond pending appeal but fled and remained at large. During his time as a fugitive, Penton committed several other child abductions and murders, including that of Amanda Brown.
Penton's criminal activities continued until his arrest in Ohio in 1988 for the sexual assault and murder of nine-year-old Nydra Ross. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in Ohio. Subsequent investigations linked him to multiple unsolved child murders in Texas, including Amanda Brown's case. In 2003, a Collin County grand jury indicted Penton on capital murder charges for the abduction and slaying of several young girls, including Amanda. To avoid the death penalty, Penton entered a plea agreement in 2005, admitting guilt to these murders and receiving additional life sentences.
