On October 4, 2024, 37-year-old Edgar Gabriel Lucero from Sunland Park, New Mexico, was fatally shot at a Whataburger located at 650 Sunland Park Drive in West El Paso, Texas. Lucero was in the drive-thru line with his stepchildren and niece when a white Ford vehicle collided with another car and subsequently struck their vehicle. Concerned for the safety of his family, Lucero confronted the driver, identified as 45-year-old Hector Manuel Lopez Jr.
During the confrontation, Lucero reportedly used a hammer to strike Lopez's vehicle, leading Lopez to fire two shots, resulting in Lucero's death.
Following the incident, Lopez was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), marking his second offense. Officers observed signs of intoxication, including glassy eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol.
