Among the victims was 70-year-old Diana Man Ling Tom, a dedicated mother, wife, and grandmother who had a passion for dance. That evening, she was at the studio celebrating with friends when the gunman opened fire, resulting in multiple casualties.
Diana sustained critical injuries and was transported to LAC+USC Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries on January 22, 2023.
The assailant, identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, carried out the attack at approximately 10:22 p.m. PST, killing eleven people and injuring nine others. Following the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, Tran proceeded to the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra, where he was confronted by Brandon Tsay, a 26-year-old civilian who managed to disarm him, preventing further violence. Tran fled the scene and was later found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Torrance, California, on January 22, 2023.
Diana Tom's family released a statement condemning the senseless act of violence that claimed her life and the lives of others. They described her as someone who always went out of her way to give to others and expressed their grief over her untimely passing. In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support the Tom family with immediate medical, funeral, family care, and legal needs.
