On January 21, 2023, Xiujuan Yu, a 57-year-old resident of Monterey Park, California, tragically lost her life in a mass shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. The incident occurred during a Lunar New Year celebration, a time meant for joy and community gathering. Ms. Yu, who had immigrated to the United States from China in the early 2010s, was a mother of three, including twins.
Her niece described her as "hard-working and diligent," noting that she had decided to step out of her comfort zone by attending the dance studio for the first time that evening.
The assailant, identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio around 10:22 p.m. and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of ten individuals on the scene, including Ms. Yu. Tran then proceeded to a second location, the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra, where he was disarmed by a civilian before fleeing. The following day, authorities located Tran in a van in Torrance, California, where he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapon used in the attack was identified as a Cobray M-11/9, a semi-automatic pistol variant of the MAC-11 with an extended high-capacity magazine, both illegal in California.
In the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, Ms. Yu's family and the broader community have been left to mourn her untimely passing. A GoFundMe campaign was established by her niece to assist with funeral expenses, reflecting the collective grief and support from those who knew her. The Monterey Park shooting stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence, particularly within close-knit communities during times of celebration.
