On January 28, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., 26-year-old Destiny Sims of Buckeye, Arizona, was fatally shot along with two other women, 33-year-old Iyana Hutton of Chicago and 29-year-old Nenah Davis of Bolingbrook, Illinois. The incident occurred in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, outside a residence in the 2700 block of North Ellison Drive that was being used as a short-term rental. The three women were found deceased inside a vehicle parked in front of the home.
The victims had traveled to Los Angeles to support a Chicago rapper and were returning from a night of bowling when they were ambushed. The assailants fired more than 30 rounds, resulting in the deaths of the three women and injuring four others, two of whom were critically wounded but survived. Authorities believe the attack was targeted, though the slain women were not the intended victims.
In the following months, a nationwide investigation led to the arrests of three suspects with gang affiliations. In April 2023, 28-year-old Dejean Thompkins and 22-year-old Dontae Williams were apprehended in the Chicago area, while 28-year-old Daries Stanford was arrested in New York on May 10, 2023. All three suspects were charged with multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office also filed special circumstance allegations, potentially leading to life sentences without parole.
Investigators connected this tragic event to gang-related activities originating in Chicago. The suspects employed ambush-style tactics, indicating a level of planning and coordination. The Los Angeles Police Department emphasized the broader implications of such violence, noting that conflicts in one city can have far-reaching effects.
The deaths of Sims, Hutton, and Davis underscore the pervasive impact of gun violence and the unintended victims it claims. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, aiming to bring justice to the victims and their families.
